Bocas del Toro: Panama’s Caribbean With Structure

If San Blas is the untouched Caribbean, Bocas del Toro is the Caribbean with infrastructure: overwater hotels, restaurants run by chefs who fled winter, surf schools, and enough nightlife to remind you that you are on vacation. It is the counterweight — and most people end up loving having both options in the same country.

The archipelago

Isla Colón is the hub, with the airport and the town of Bocas. Around it: Bastimentos (Red Frog Beach, Caribbean-village vibe), Carenero (walkable, calm) and dozens of smaller islands. Starfish Beach, the bioluminescent lagoon and the surf breaks fill however many days you give them.

Getting there

• Flight: ~1h from Panama City (Albrook) straight to Isla Colón;
• By land: bus/car to Almirante (long haul) + 30-min water taxi — the budget route.

The honest part

Bocas is backpacker-flavored: lively, a bit disorganized, prices creeping up on holidays, and the town itself is no postcard — the postcards are a boat ride away. Rainy season here follows its own Caribbean logic, so check the calendar. For living, some expats love the community; most prefer visiting a few times a year.
