Base
Every big city needs an escape valve, and Panama City’s is Taboga — 30 minutes by ferry from the Amador Causeway. The “Island of Flowers” has a village founded in 1524 (one of the oldest in the Pacific Americas), a church that claims to be the hemisphere’s second oldest, and the delicious feeling of being far away while literally seeing the city’s skyline on the horizon.
The day out
Beach in front of the village (busy on weekends), a short hike to Cerro de la Cruz for the view, fried fish for lunch, a slow walk through flowered lanes, last ferry home. That is the itinerary and it is enough.
Practical
- Ferry: a few companies leave from Amador daily — buy the return ticket upfront on busy days;
- Weekdays win: Saturdays get crowded with locals (which is also charming, choose your mood);
- Bring cash — the island is simple.
The honest part
Taboga’s water is city-adjacent Pacific: pleasant, not San Blas. Go for the history, the flowers and the easiest island logistics in Panama — not for snorkeling postcards.
