Ask any expat where they buy in bulk and the answer is one word: PriceSmart. Think Costco — literally: the chain was founded by the same family behind the original Price Club — adapted to Central America and the Caribbean. Several stores around Panama City (Via Brasil, Costa del Este, Brisas del Golf and more) and a membership card as the entry ticket.
How it works
- Membership: around US$40/year, covers a second household card;
- Format: warehouse aisles, pallet stacks, big formats — the familiar ritual;
- The famous extras: the food court (yes, the cheap hot dog + soda combo exists here too), the bakery, and the rotisserie chicken that solves dinner.
What is worth it
Meat and salmon, cheese, wine, paper goods, electronics on offer, tires, and the pharmacy. Imported American brands often cost less here than in regular supermarkets. For a family, the card pays for itself in a month or two.
The honest part
Weekends are war — locals treat PriceSmart as a family outing. Go on weekday mornings. And beware the classic warehouse-club trap: nobody actually needs 2 kg of gummy bears. (Nobody regrets them either.)
