Let’s name the elephant: customer service is one of Panama’s weakest points. Not everywhere, not everyone — but often enough that every expat has a collection of stories: the counter attendant finishing a personal chat while the line grows, the store that never answers, the “come back tomorrow” that means nothing.
Why it is like this
Low service culture + little competition in many niches + labor dynamics where motivation is scarce. It is not malice — urgency simply is not a shared value, and the customer is not automatically king here.
The tactics that work
- WhatsApp over everything: businesses that ignore phones answer WhatsApp; ask for the attendant’s direct number when something matters;
- Face beats phone: showing up in person moves queues that calls never will;
- Relationships are the cheat code: become a regular, learn names, greet in Spanish — the same counter that shrugged at a stranger solves everything for a conocido;
- Patience as budget: allocate double the time for bureaucracy and you will stop suffering;
- Pay for premium when it exists: private clinics, concierge banking and good law firms DO deliver international-standard service — that tier exists, priced accordingly.
The honest part
There are brilliant exceptions everywhere, and younger businesses are visibly better. But if flawless service is a core need, calibrate now: in Panama you buy efficiency with relationships, patience or money — usually some of each.
